Home of the ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’
The Pitcairn Islands are made up of four islands which are named Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno islands. These islands are located in the South Pacific halfway between South America and New Zealand at a distance of 2170 km from Tahiti. This isolated destination has been forever immortalized in numerous movies and books for its association with an incidence which took place on a British ship HMS Bounty. Pitcairn is the only inhabited island which is accessible from Bounty Bay but even then it is difficult to access as no ships drop anchor here due to the treacherous waters. The population today consists of less than fifty people who have descended from the mutineers and their Tahitian consorts or wives. The culture is thus an inimitable amalgamation of European and Polynesian cultures. The island continues to remain one of the most remote destinations on earth with no tourist facilities or television and no communication links with the outside world except a community telephone and slow snail mail . The sights worth exploring here are Bounty Bay which has a museum in which many artifacts from the Bounty are preserved including Fletcher Christian’s Bible also worth investigating is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Henderson Island with its steep limestone coral cliffs and rare avian fauna.
