


Taquile on Lake Titicaca

Isla Taquile is around 30 miles from the main town of Puno, it has numerous amounts of Inca and Pre-Inca ruins. With its breathtaking views of the deep red-coloured soil and the deep blue of the lake itself, there is no wonder it can have up to 50 boats visiting it every day during the high season.
Taquile is a fantastic tourist destination, not only for its amazing beauty but also for its culture and textile traditions in spinning, weaving and knitting which can be seen through the style and colour of the clothing worn by the local people and reflects their beliefs.
The island is just over half a mile wide and 4-5 miles long on Lake Titicaca, but even with it being a pretty small island it is still worth having a over night stay to get a full taste of what the island as to offer. When you arrive on the island you will be approached by boys wanting to putting a friendship bracelet on your wrist.
There is also traditional music been made on sale for an additional income to the islanders which helps them to supplement their handicrafts. They also appreciate gifts of fruit, sugar and non electrical touches.
If you have plans on staying overnight then it is advisable to take some warm clothes and sleeping bag with you. The island as plenty of private accommodation for visitors to stay in overnight. There is also numerous festivals that take place on the island with dance traditions that happen in between and weddings are celebrated in the months of May and August.
