Lima is a city that is large, crowded and noisy, although at first glance it does not seem that impressive on the outside it as very friendly people, plenty of historical sites and quality dining and museum establishments which makes Lima a pretty interesting place to visit.
Festivals go on all year, so know matter when you decide to visit, there will be a celebration going on somewhere in the city. One of the more popular festivals is The Lord of the Miracles which is celebrated in the month of October with street parades and a life size statue of Jesus. The faithful followers of this festival are usually dressed in purple robes which is accompanied with music, singing and the ringing of bells to the burning of incense.
Another big celebration that goes on in the month of October is the bullfighting, where some of the best bullfighters around the world come to the Plaza de Acho ring and compete for the Escapulario de Oro, which is the equivalent of getting a gold medal in the olympics.
Lima also as plenty of museums to explore and learn about it's cultural heritage, some of the most popular ones to visit is The Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology which as an amazing collection of pottery and textiles from all the cultures of ancient Peru. Another popular museum to visit is the Museum of the Republic.
However if your into the cafe, shopping and restaurant culture then you need to head down to the district of San Isidro and Miraflores where you will find artists selling their paintings on weekends, hot spots for people watching, trendy cafes selling the Peruvian coffee and streets crammed with open air tables and restaurants.
