The ‘Land of the Incas,’ ancient civilizations and mysteries
Peru is a country located in western South America and is bordered by Chile to the south, Bolivia to the southeast, Brazil to the north east, Ecuador to the North West and Colombia to the north.
Most visitors come to Peru to hike up the world famous Inca trail which crosses the remotest parts of the Andes. This 43 km ( 27 mile) stone paved trail leads to the designated World Heritage Natural and Cultural site of Machu Picchu . The trail which takes four days to complete traverses through high mountain passes the highest one being 13440 ft(4200 m) and passes several old Inca ruins until it arrives at the majestic and imposing ‘Lost city’ deep in the cloud forest.
Another attraction from Inca times are the man made floating islands of Lake Titicaca inhabited by the Uros Indian tribes who believe they are direct descendants of the Incas. These islands are part of the legend that says that the Incas rose from the crystal blue waters of the world’s highest navigable lake, the Lake Titicaca located at an altitude of 12580ft (3825 m).
Enchanting Peru has yet another attraction in the form of the mysterious archaeological Nazca lines which are the mystifying eight hundred straight lines, geometric figures and drawings spread over an area of 500 sq km(193 sq m) in a rock strewn, dry arid terrain.
