Avian Fauna, Theater, Music and the Arts
The landlocked country of Paraguay in South America is surrounded by Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. The waters of the Pilcomayo and the Paraguay which ultimately flow into the Paraná shape the terrain of Paraguay. The country is divided into two distinct regions on either side of the Rio Paraguay. The eastern part consists of well irrigated plateaus and savannah grasslands. This is where most of the population is concentrated while to the west of the Rio Paraguay lays the Gran Chaco which makes up the major part of the country’s area but is largely uncultivable and sparingly populated.

Paraguay has 365 species of birds which include 21 species of parakeets and parrots most of which are found in the Chaco. Jaribus, wood storks, waterfowl as well as reptiles such as camians and anacondas are also found on the banks of the rivers. The Paraguayans are a cultured people who have an appreciation for the arts which includes home grown theater. Most theater is staged at the Teatro Municipal in the capital city of Asunción. Music and dance which have major European influences also play an important part in the lives of the people.
