Published by jacko77 on Fri Oct 30th, 2009
Lake Como is situated in the northern part of Italy and is part of the Italian Lake District which as been a popular destination for over 100 years because of its fresh air, mountain views and great weather.
The lake comes in the shape of an inverted 'Y' with Como being the starting point in the south west and Lecco being in the South East which comes together around the half way point and then continues on up north to the town of Colico.
The scenery around Lake Como is amazing with its mountainous views, beauty and characteristics that impresses any tourists that come and visit this fantastic natural beauty of Northern Italy. However the first few kilometres of the lake are pretty flat, but the further north you go the more mountainous and scenic it becomes.
You will come across several towns while touring up the lake, with Como being the lakes main town and popular starting point with an estimated 80,000 locals.
Menaggio is the main town on the western shore but is a very attractive town with its coffee shops and restaurants.
Bellagio is located at the junction of the two legs of the lake and is another attractive town that is worth visiting but can be expensive.
Varenna is another beautiful town that is on the eastern shore opposite to the towns of Menaggio and Bellagio that is worth visiting because of its relaxing and nice gardens.
