Published by jacko77 on Thu Oct 15th, 2009

The Palio of Siena is one of the most popular and well-known festivals in Italy that happen within the months of July and August, with the exciting horse race being the main focus that happens within Siena's main square.

Siena itself is divided into 17 separate neighbourhoods with each having their own rider, with 10 of the contenders taking part in the first race that takes place on July 2nd.  Then the other 7 plus an additional 3 from the first race take part in the competition on August 16th.

The race day itself starts with a mass, trial runs and blessing of the horses which is followed by a tour of the historical heritage of Siena at around 3pm that includes participants from each neighbourhood dressed in their own costumes and performing by the use of flag throwing.  The parade itself finishes at Piazza del Campo.

During the races themselves it can get very crowded and with only room for around 27,000 people for standing and 32,500 seats which get reserved well in advanced it is advisable to book your accommodation in Siena 4-6 months before the festival itself starts.
