Grotta Gigante Cave Of Trieste
Published by jacko77 on Mon Nov 16th, 2009
The Grotta Gigante Cave which means Giant Cave is one of the main reasons to visit Trieste of Italy and lives up to its name by being the largest accessible cave in the world and has the second largest natural chamber, with the Mulu Caves in Malaysia been the only natural chamber that is the largest in the world.
The cave itself is 350ft in depth by around 600ft in width which makes the dome of St Peters fit comfortably inside with plenty of space left for exploration. The internal temperature of the cave is around 11ºC.
With its impressive scale and amazing scenery like most of the caves around this area it was created by the erosive action of the rivers, which in this case the Timazo just went deeper and deeper underground before deciding to change it's course and now the cave is dry for visitors to experience one of the largest natural chambers in the world.
The most scenic route up the Carso mountains is to take the tram, which starts from Trieste's Piazza Oberdan to the village of Opicina, then you will cross the square and hop on bus number 42 which will take you all the way to the main highlight of Trieste – The Grotta Gigante.
The Grotta Gigante Cave is currently open to the public all year round, although you are only allowed to enter with one of the fixed guided tours.
