Mountains constitute great part of Italy’s landscape with the Apennines which stretch for a thousand kilometers from Genoa to the southern tip of the peninsula forming the backbone along its eastern coast. Apart from this mountain range the Alps and the Dolomites also add to the topography. Three active volcanoes also contribute to the diversity of the landscape and these are located in Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands, Mount Vesuvius near Naples and Mount Etna on Sicily. Quaint sea side fishing villages and the resort town of San Remo with its simmering sand beaches are found on the Italian Riviera adding yet another dimension to a holiday on the Italian peninsula.

Italy has seen a number of civilizations such as the Romans and the Estruscans and it was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance examples of which are available all over the country in its baroque churches, Roman ruins, Byzantine mosaics, Rocco tombs and trompe l’oeil ceilings.
