Military coups, Shark calls and an ethnically diverse population
The tropical Paradise called Fiji is an archipelago of 322 islands, located in the South Pacific nearly two thousand miles from the east of Australia on the eastern edge of a region known as Melanesia. These islands are located to the south of the equator, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn and west of the international dateline.

The two biggest islands that make up Fiji are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Nadi airport on the Viti Levu is served by a number of airlines which carry plane loads of tourists to these beautiful islands which perennially bask in the warm tropical sunshine. The stunning landscape is renowned for its lush tropical blooms, gushing water falls that end in jungle pools and its palm fringed white sand beaches which are immensely popular with scuba divers and snorkellers who enjoy diving in the reefs to see the coral gardens and the rich marine life which includes manta rays, lion fish and scorpion fish .Astrobale Reef is one such reef which is popular with scuba divers while surfers enjoy riding the almost 20ft waves known as cloud breakers off the island of Tavarua. The capital of Fiji the lively city of Suva is located Viti Levu.

Tourists use Suva which city known for its shopping and nightlife as a gateway to the other islands such as the glorious Mamanuca and Rotuma groups of islands. Though Fiji is geared towards offering the tourist the tropical paradise experience its indigenous people still practice age old rituals and customs. One such fascinating ritual is the shark calling ritual and it is practiced in the village of Nassaqualau in the month of October each year.
