Published by jacko77 on Wed Jun 17th, 2009

Tortuguero National Park is one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica, with its ecotourism and is a must visit while your in this diverse country.

One of the most world renowned attractions in the park is the turtles, which can be seen between the months of February to October in several different species and is one of the most important locations in the western caribbean for the green sea turtle, but a few other types nest here as well by the name of the giant leatherback and loggerhead.

Apart from visiting the several different species of turtles, it also offers the visitor with boat tours, crystal clean beaches and lush green forests.  There is plenty to experience here but it is advisable to stay for a couple of nights to get a real taste of the park.

The park is a gold mine for anyone interested in nature, because of the variety of what the national park has to offer.  There is even some of the most rare amphibians & reptiles that will only be found here in Costa Rica.

In total the Tortuguero National Park has:

·    Around 57 amphibians.
·    Over 100 reptiles.
·    Close to 308 types of birds to date.
·    30 fresh water fish.
·    60 types of mammals.

It is advisable if you want to make the most of your stay, to have a guide for the day.  That way you will get to see more wildlife and maximise your stay.  The various lodges and hotels are located just north of the small town of Tortuguero, which provide the visitor with plenty of boat tours, weather it be a fixed tour or private rental.
