Tortuguero Canals is the equivalent of the Amazon, which is full of fascinating wildlife, with its extensive water system of natural and man-made waterways.  It gets used for simple transportation for locals to get from one point to the other, but for the adventurers amongst you it is great for jungle exploration.

Like with any destination you want to go, its the journey to the canals what is half the fun.  You will experience the coffee plantations outside of San Jose, while taking a journey through the Braulio Carrillo National Park.  Then you will head down to the lowlands of Limon which is on the Caribbean coast.  This is where the jungle itself will finally come to end and you will see the beginning of small towns and banana plantations.  This journey will just give you a taste of what Costa Rica as to offer the keen traveller.

While on your scenic boat ride down the canal you will get to experience the dense rainforests which will allow you to observe some of the most amazing wildlife species that the Tortuguero Canals has to offer.  Once you get under the forest canopy itself, you will have the chance to see toucans, the playful howler monkeys and many other species.

Then you might get a taste of the poison dart frogs that will show off their vivid colors.  If you decide to go with a naturalist guide, they will point out and explain the various plants and animal life, which truly brings the forest to life.

The Tortugero National Park is also one of the most important nesting sites in the world and is famous for the green back turtle.
