Published by jacko77 on Thu Jul 9th, 2009

Pacuare River which is also known as the Rio Pacuare is one of Costa Rica's hotspots for any keen whitewater rafter.  It as been ranked as one of the top ten rivers in the world and according to some people it is the number one river in the world to go and try out some of this adrenaline junkie sport.

With it's heart pounding water, fantastic jungle location and warm water which can reach to about 70 degrees there is no wonder this as become such a popular thrill seeker destination for those who are searching for a bigger and better thrill to their previous white water rafting experience.

The most common section of the river is the lower section which as a class of III rapids and goes from Finca La Cruz and is around 24 miles to the town of Siquirries which is covered over a two day trip, but if your only up for a one day trip then you can start from Tres Equis which cuts the trip down to 19miles.

Once you reach the town of Siquirries the water starts to calm down and as very little current because the water is heading into the caribbean sea just a few miles north of Puerto Limon in Tortegura.

The upper section of Pacuare River which ends at the Finca La Cruz it is around 11 miles long and it contains many class IV and V rapids which include multiple waterfalls and is typically done in a whitewater kayak.

While your taking your descent down the river you will come across many banana plantations in the last 30 miles, home to many Cabecar Indians along the east side,  flora and fauna such as ant eaters, racoons and howler monkeys on the lower section

There is camping facilities available down each side of the river for multi day trips and is complete with kitchens, bathrooms and tents or for more of a luxury trip there is also lodges available.
