A typical South Sea Experience

Fifteen islands make up the country of the Cooks Islands which is located in the South Pacific and covers an area of two million square kilometers. These beautiful Polynesian islands were formed due to volcanic activity and are characterized by pristine white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, friendly inhabitants and a slow pace of life. Most inhabitants of these islands live around the nation’s capital of Rarotonga which has an international airport and is the gateway to the outer islands for the numerous visitors who visit the islands each year in search of the perfect ‘South Sea’ experience. Tourism along with offshore banking, pearl and fruit exports are the main industries of these islands. The best way to visit the islands is by air and Air Rarotonga provides air links between eight of these islands. One can also traverse the islands by sea by private yachts or passenger cruise ships as well. The outer islands still remain somewhat inaccessible and hence are relatively unspoilt by commercial tourism.

Tourists enjoy activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, sun bathing and lazing on the simmering sand beaches, reefs and lagoons which dot these islands. Aitutaki has one such wonderful lagoon with sand bars and coral ridges. A must do on a Cook Islands itinerary is a visit to the limestone caves on Atiu. These caves with their magnificent stalactites and stalagmite formations are a visual delight. The most famous cave here is Anatakitaki which is also called ‘Kopeka Cave’ as it is the abode of a rare bird called ‘kopeka.’ The powder sand beaches and turquoise blue waters of Tapuaeta’i and Muri Beach enhance the paradise island experience of the Cooks Islands further.
