Colombia

Undiscovered natural beauty
The US state department and the British Foreign office routinely advise against travel to Colombia which is largely an undiscovered jewel. The fourth largest country in South America has coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is bordered by Panama to the North, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the south east and Ecuador to the south west with Peru bringing up the southern border. Colombia’s terrain is very varied and is made up of the Amazonian Jungle, valleys of the Andes and flat plains.
The capital of Colombia Bogota is a unique blend of old world charm consisting of Spanish architecture and new world modernity in the form of towering skyscrapers. Cartagena, the colonial Spanish port is also a major draw with its mediaeval walled town, monasteries, plazas and buildings with suspended balconies. Located in the vicinity of this town are beach resorts with excellent beach combing and scuba diving amenities.
Colombia’s diverse landscape also consists of rainforests which have national parks such as The Los Katios National Park in Choco, with its numerous rare species of flora and fauna.. These jungles also have in their environs archeological treasures such as the ruins of the ancient city of La Cuida Perida with its 150 stone terraces. Stone tombs, burial mounds and monuments are other treasures to be explored at San Augustin and Tierrodentro. The natural beauty of Colombia however continues to play second fiddle to its crime rate which continues to keep this relatively undiscovered country in the news.
